I was really shocked when I saw the barn door for the first time. It was so beautiful that it didn’t even look like a door▼
At that moment, I had the urge to replace all the doors in my house with barn doors. But after I calmed down, I began to have a deeper understanding of barn doors, and I discovered that although barn doors look good, they are far less useful than swing doors and sliding doors. Its shortcomings are mainly reflected in the following three aspects.
1. Poor sealing
The barn door is actually more like a large curtain. It is okay to use it to ensure indoor (visual) privacy. But the smells, sounds, temperatures, etc. in the room can easily pass through the barn door.
In other words, calling a barn door a \”door\” is even a bit far-fetched. Its performance does not meet the basic requirements of doors at all – so those rooms that require doors, such as bedrooms and studies, cannot install barn doors.
2. Short lifespan
Sliding doors are divided into hanging rail doors and ground rail doors. Those without tracks on the ground are all hanging rail doors. Obviously, barn doors are a type of hanging rail door. Compared with floor rail doors, the biggest drawback of hanging rail doors is their short lifespan – because there is no support from the ground rails and they rely entirely on the top rails for stress.
However, barn doors are different from hanging rail doors. There are at least multiple points on the rails of the hanging rail door that are stressed, while barn doors generally only have two points. This is a focus. Therefore, barn doors have the lowest lifespan among all hanging rail doors.
So doors that need to be opened and closed frequently are not suitable for use as bathroom doors.
3. Large area
After the barn door is opened, either place the door leaf at one end of the door opening or place it on the wall next to the door. Either way, it will cause. Some unnecessary space is occupied.
Compared with swing doors that can be attached to the wall when the rear door leaf is opened, barn doors take up a larger area – this is a drawback of all sliding doors
So it is usually possible to install a flat door. Barn doors are not recommended for openings (nor are sliding doors)
